Preparation for Mammogram and Breast Ultrasound
On the day of the examination do not apply deodorant, body powder or other material on your underarms or around the breasts. Wear clothing that can be removed from the waist up, you will be given a gown to wear during the examination.
Preparation for Ultrasounds
All examinations are 30 - 60 minutes in duration
Abdominal Ultrasound
(including gallbladder, liver, aorta, spleen, pancreas)
• do not eat or drink from 10 pm the night before until completion of the examination
Renal Ultrasound
• do not empty your bladder for 2 hrs prior
to the examination
• children 10 years of age should attempt not to empty bladder 1 hr prior to examination
Combined Abdominal & Pelvic Scan
• do not eat from 10 pm the evening before until completion of examination
• follow instructions of pelvic scan below
Preparation Pelvic or Obstetric Scan
A full bladder is essential
• start drinking four 8 oz. (250ml / 32 oz. / 1 L total) glasses of fluid, except milk or carbonated drinks, 2 hours prior to exam.
• finish drinking above fluids 1.5 hours
prior to examination • do not empty bladder until after scan • patients in the last 8 weeks of pregnancy require only 16 oz (500 ml) of fluid
Preparation Bone Densitometry • wear pull-on pants • do not take calcium on the day of your examination
• do not wear an under wire bra
All other examinations not listed above do not require preparation
