Diagnostic Ultrasound
use sound waves to create images of your organs. The high quality images created by ultrasound are particularly useful since:
• Ultrasound creates very accurate pictures of body soft tissues — organs such as your liver, kidneys, and blood vessels are usually well seen.
• The ultrasound "probe" is hand held by the technologist so the images can be obtained from any angle.
• The ultrasound study can "see" the motion of organs and detect movement and direction of blood flow.
• There is no x-ray radiation with ultrasound. Therefore ultrasound is very safe and does not pose any risk to a pregnant woman or unborn child.
• During your pregnancy, for example, your doctor may want you to have an Ultrasound to:
- Estimate your delivery date
-
Check for twin pregnancy
-
Check to ensure your baby is growing properly
-
Check the position of your placenta
